Brussels, 23 June 2023 – Smartfin, a prominent European venture capital fund, has been ranked 9th out of the top 20 performing venture capital funds in the prestigious HEC Paris-DowJones Venture Capital Performance Ranking. The ranking, conducted by Professor Oliver Gottschalg of HEC Paris, highlights Smartfin’s exceptional performance and positions the firm as the only European fund among the top performers.

The study, now in its 2nd edition, reveals a significant presence of new and smaller venture capital firms delivering remarkable returns and challenging traditional notions of success within the industry. Smartfin’s inclusion in the top 10 emphasizes the fund’s dedication and commitment to achieving outstanding results over the past decade.

Jürgen Ingels, Founding Partner of Smartfin, expressed his pride in the firm’s achievement, stating, “This recognition is the result of 10 years of hard work, strategic investments, and our unwavering commitment to supporting innovative entrepreneurs. We are thrilled to be ranked among the top-performing venture capital funds and to represent the Belgian and broader European venture capital landscape on this prestigious list.”

Ingels added “As we continue to drive growth and support innovative entrepreneurs, we are excited about our ongoing fundraising for Smartfin Capital III, our third growth fund with a target fund size of €250 million. Smartfin Capital III will enable us to further expand our support for the startup ecosystem, following the same successful investment strategy and philosophy as our predecessor funds.”

The HEC Paris-DowJones Venture Capital Performance Ranking evaluates firms based on their cumulative performance and capital raised over a 10-year period, from 2009 to 2018. With a focus on aggregate performance across all venture capital funds, the ranking provides a comprehensive assessment of the industry’s top performers.

While US-based venture capital firms continue to dominate the rankings, Smartfin’s presence as the only European fund among the top performers showcases the firm’s ability to compete on a global scale. The study also highlights the increasing globalization of the private equity sector, with formidable players emerging from various regions worldwide.

Smartfin’s strong performance and recognition in the HEC Paris-DowJones Venture Capital Performance Ranking solidify the firm’s position as a leading player in the European venture capital landscape. With a continued focus on identifying and nurturing innovative startups, Smartfin remains committed to driving growth, generating value, and delivering outstanding returns for its shareholders.
