The Team

The day-to-day management of the Fund is led by Jurgen Ingels, Bart Luyten, Thomas Depuydt and Bert Baeck, who have been working in the industry since the late nineties and have successful track records in both economic up and down cycles.

Team Members

Jürgen Ingels

Founding Partner. Before co-founding SmartFin, Jürgen was also member of the Investment Committee of Sniper Investments. Until its sale to FIS in 2014, Jürgen was the founder and CFO of Clear2Pay, a leading payments technology company. Under his leadership, he grew the company to one of the world leaders in payment security software with more than 1,200 employees in 14 countries. Jürgen also co-founded: NGData, a big data company offering customer intelligence management software and services to track customer behavior in real time; Minos Capital, an early-stage private investment vehicle focused on FinTech investments; and The Glue, a software platform to enable financial services companies to accelerate innovation and facilitate rapid transformation initiatives. He started his career as Investment Manager with Dexia Ventures (previously Quadra Invest), where he focused on investing in early-stage technology companies while taking a pro-active role in their business strategy, product launches and financial management. He currently holds Board positions at several technology companies such as Materialise (NASDAQ: MTLS), Itiviti, NGData, UnifiedPost, Itineris, The Glue, Akinon and Deliverect.

Jurgen holds a Master of Science degree in Political and Social Sciences and an MBA from the University of Antwerp.

Bart Luyten

Founding Partner. Before co-founding SmartFin, Bart was the founder and managing director of Sniper Investments, a very successful smart technology growth fund that was liquidated mid 2016. Before that, Bart had experience as Investment Director of Partners At Venture and Managing Partner of Privast Capital Partners, both Belgian-based private equity and venture capital funds with a focus on technology investments.  Bart currently holds positions on the Board of different European technology companies such as Materialise (NASDAQ: MTLS), Divitel, UnifiedPost, Eyesee, Itineris and serves on the advisory board of Boston Millennia Partners II, a US based private equity firm he was associated with earlier in his career.

Bart holds a Master of Science degree in Applied Economics from the University of Antwerp and a postgraduate Master’s degree in SME management.”

Thomas Depuydt

Managing Partner. Before joining SmartFin, Thomas worked as Portfolio Manager for iMinds (now part of imec), where he managed a portfolio of 100+ companies that graduated from the iMinds’ incubation program and supported them in their fundraising and growth strategies. Before that, Thomas was active in management consulting at Accenture, in both product and project management roles, and more recently at Bain & Company as part of their private equity practice, where he advised investment funds and corporates on strategic and operational matters. He currently holds Board positions at Cumul.io, Silverfin and Theo Technologies.

Thomas holds a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Leuven and a Master of Science in Computer Sciences from the University of Ghent and holds an MBA from Columbia Business School.”

Bert Baeck

Managing Partner. Before joining SmartFin, Bert was CEO and Co-founder of TrendMiner, a successful SaaS IoT/Analytics software company acquired by Software AG in 2018. TrendMiner scaled to 85 employees, with offices in 3 continents, exporting to more than 22 countries in less than 36 months. Before that, Bert was Sales & Marketing Director of ‘D square’ and started his career at Bayer Material Science (now called Covestro) where he was Data Optimization Manager. He currently holds Board positions at several technology companies such as VersaSense, Rombit, Roamler, Proceedix and Iristick.

Bert holds a Master of Science Degree in Computer Sciences and a Master of Science Degree in Micro-Electronics from the University of Ghent.

Sébastien Thiel

Partner – CFO. Before joining SmartFin, Sébastien was Managing Partner and Co-founder of Finsight Solutions, one of the first companies in Belgium providing ‘CFO as a service’ acquired by Grant Thornton in 2020. Before that, Sébastien was Global Finance Director of Clear2Pay where he took over the CFO role of Jürgen after its sale to FIS in 2014. Before joining Clear2Pay Sébastien gained experience in international reporting and consolidation at Capco and started his career at EY.

Sébastien holds a Master Degree in Commercial Sciences and a postgraduate Master’s degree inCorporate Finance from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve.

Harry Haeck

Investment Manager. Before joining SmartFin, Harry worked for several years in the Private Equity team of BNP Paribas Fortis, where he focused on both direct and indirect investments. Before that, he participated in the Senior Talent Program of BNP Paribas Fortis where he worked on various strategic projects across different business lines of the bank. He started his career as a business lawyer at Liedekerke and Deloitte Legal (formerly Laga), focusing on banking and financial law.

Harry holds a Master of Laws from the University of Ghent, a Master of Science in Management from the University of Leuven and a Master in Financial Management from Vlerick Business School.

Toon De Neef

Investment Associate. Before joining SmartFin, Toon gained experience as a Corporate Banking Trainee at BNP Paribas Fortis and as an Investment Analyst in the Venture Capital team at PMV. Prior to these experiences, Toon conducted a consultancy project at Soudal where he analyzed and updated the management reporting system. He also completed an Investment Banking internship at Kempen & Co where he was part of the Local Alpha Team covering European equities.

Toon holds a Master of Science degree in Applied Economics from the University of Leuven and a postgraduate Master’s degree in Financial Management from Vlerick Business School.

Advisors

Willem Prinselaar

Willem is Chairman of SmartFin Capital, was one of the founders and Chairman of Sniper Investments and one of the co-founders and managing partners of Privast Capital Partners. Prior to that, Willem had an international career with ICI Plc during which he was heavily involved in a large number of acquisitions and divestments. He then created DBM Belgium, specializing in career transition counselling for senior management. During this time, he also advised Chase Investment Bank, focusing on major management buy-ins in the European chemical sector. He was educated in the Netherlands and holds an MBA degree from INSEAD.

Stefan Dierckx

Stefan is one of the co-founders and member of the investment committee of SmartFin Capital. He is Founding Partner and CEO of Projective, a leading independent company specialized in pan-European program and project management for the financial services industry. Under his leadership, Projective has grown to become a team of +100 project managers with offices in Brussels, London and Amsterdam. Stefan is also a co-Founder of Minos Capital, an early-stage private investment vehicle focused on fintech investments and The Glue, a software platform to enable financial services companies to accelerate innovation and facilitate rapid transformation initiatives. Stefan is currently still involved in a broad range of high-end change programs within the banking industry in Europe. This experience helps him to further shape his view on the financial industry trends and issues. Prior to Projective, Stefan was a Managing Principal of Capco, a global business and technology consultancy dedicated to the financial services industry. Stefan holds a Master of Science degree in Applied Economics from the University of Antwerp.

Luc Synaeghel

Luc was one of the founders and directors of Sniper Investments and the founder and managing director of Partners At Venture. He was the Chief Investment Officer of Geneva-based private bank Banque Thaler and was also the CEO of Sniper One, a successful long/short equity fund active on the Belgian stock market.  Prior to that, Luc was active as a merchant navy officer and financial analyst before becoming general manager of Budget Week and several other financial publications in Europe.

Luc holds a degree as Merchant Navy Officer from the Antwerp Nautical College, a Master’s degree in Maritime Sciences from the University of Antwerp and a Master’s degree in Portfolio Management from ICHEC, Brussels.
